Technical specifications
Melanotan II is a synthetic analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone that binds several melanocortin receptors rather than acting on one. Research has examined melanogenesis, the pigment-producing pathway associated with the MC1R receptor, and separately the part melanocortin signalling plays in appetite regulation and sexual arousal, which are associated with MC4R. Because the compound is not selective, work in this area also has to account for activity at receptors other than the one under study. The consequences of non-selective melanocortin agonism are not well characterised.
